The Blogging Mission

By David Tonen • March 27th, 2008

If you belong to a church, here is a tested idea that worked very well recently at the church I attend.

Most churches at some point have a short-term mission trip to somewhere outside their town or city.  My church, LifeBridge Community Church in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, recently had a team of 8 people on a 10-day mission trip to Honduras.  People in our congregation support children through Compassion Canada at projects in the capital city of Honduras, Tegucigalpa. We set up a Missions Blog so that the rest of the congregation could get updates from the team on a daily basis while they were representing God and LifeBridge in Honduras.

The blog was a huge success. Our church is just under 100 people in size, but the blog was read over 3000 times during the 10-day journey by the mission team.  It served as a great way for the team members to write short posts on their daily experiences and people in our church were excited to get the play-by-play details of those occurrences.

So, next time your church sends out a mission team, consider creating blog. It is free, easy to set-up, and does a great job unifying your church and helping people experience the journey together. This is one way a blog can help a church both from a communication and marketing perspective.
