I can see what you are getting at when you refer to a chain letter as social media, but I personally do not think it is. It is media, and it is social, but it is not an exchange and interplay of information, ideas, and conversation which is at the heart of social media as it is defined today.</description>

I think that as I interpret &#039;social media&#039; as something that always has been around us. Like for example, a chain letter - is, if you would ask me - part of  &#039;social media&#039;.

Also it is very hard to find who used the term &#039;social media&#039; for the first time and why, where and in what context.

We at www.crossmedialab.nl are still searching for the answers.
