Waasup? Obama?

By David Tonen • October 27th, 2008

Here I go with the politics again! Quite unlike me really!  Yesterday I found our about this new YouTube Ad (below) circulating around the Internet.  Maybe you will remember the Budweiser “Waasup?” ads that hit TV eight years ago?  Well, the original cast in those ads have now done an ad supporting Barrack Obama.  This ad, only available online has been available on YouTube for only 3 days (and at the time of this writing) has been viewed 1,827,581 times.  Do you see the power of Social Media?

What is happening here is called Viral Marketing.  It is the amazing phenomenon where some content is created online (often through Social Media – like YouTube), and it spreads across the globe and from person to person via e-mail, blogs, Twitter, Facebook, all sorts of social media platforms.   Watch the video and you will see just how powerful this new marketing methodology and technique can be in promotion of a cause, product, person, or service.

What is your opinion on the video, and the power of Viral Marketing?  Will this help Obama win the Presidency? Please click on “comments” and add your opinion below!

Though I’m not sure the video will win the presidency for Obama, I like the way it uses serious topics in a comical way. I think sometimes it’s easier for people to swallow difficult information when it makes them laugh.

Thanks for your comments Katrina. You are correct, the video in and of itself will not necessarily win the Presidency for Obama but the think I like about it are the things you point to in your comment. It raises issues in a way people can connect with. There have been several viral ads on YouTube in the past year and each of them has the power and reach to connect with people in a unique way that traditional TV ads do not…and at a significantly lower cost!

The other benefit is that people choose to watch them rather than being interrupted to watch them!
