To me, the google ad says, "These are some people who believe so strongly in their site that they are paying google to drive people there." That's worth a click sometimes imo. I agree about SEO being a better longterm investment. However, sometimes you need a quick burst. Our experience has been that certain kinds of ROI increase dramatically when we run adwords for properly chosen search phrases. Interesting points.
