Social Media President
The morning after the 2008 US Presidential election. We all watched and experienced history last night. It was one of those “where were you when” moments in life. Barack Obama elected as President of the United States.
Regardless of your political stance, there is one thing I want us to realize today that we must consider as it relates to the organizations we manage, work at, or lead. This presidential campaign by Obama implemented technology more than any other in history. Social Media tools were an integrated part of his campaign – and it helped. It may even have helped a lot.
Look at tools that were in play on BarackObama.com - if you go to the site and scroll down the page on the right side you will see links to Facebook, MySpace, YouTube, Twitter, Digg, LinkedIn and many more social media tools and platforms. If you go to JohnMcCain.com you will find a few of these social media tools but only the bigger ones like Facebook…and they are much harder to find.
Now, I am not saying that the integration of social media tools was the reason Obama won. However, they did play a major roll in connecting with a sometimes disengaged voting demographic – the 18 to 35 segment. By embracing social media tools, Obama’s campaign was able to build relationships and conversations via these networks that they otherwise would not have had. They went were this voting block meets. They embraced this new social media culture…and it did help.
Technology platforms are increasingly being integrated in how we as a society interact with media. CNN reports a record upswing in visitors to its web site last night as the results rolled in – 27 million unique visitors. I really think, if you ever doubted the effect and impact of technology and social media’s relevance to your organization, that this would be a good time to reassess. There is still time now for you to embrace some of these platforms to connect with your customers and your constituents. The longer you delay, the harder it will be to catch up later. Please reevaluate and seek help on how these tools will revolutionize your organization now and in the future. It will make a difference to your future success!
