Churches Should Start Communicating
What do you think of when you see these two words:
Church Marketing
In many church circles those two words never co-exist. Many churches, especially the traditional ones, or ones that have been around for 50+ years think marketing has no place in the church. A well respected church strategist Tony Morgan has come out and said that Churches Should Stop Marketing. Since today’s article by Tony is part of a series…we’ll have to see where he takes it. So far he is just teasing us. Actually, I think he is nicely trying to draw greater attention to the fact that churches need to start marketing more effectively.
Seth Godin in his latest book Tribes defines:
“Marketing is the act of telling stories about things we make – stories that sell and stories that spread.”
Marketing is communication. Churches have the best message on this planet to communicate. Yet, all too often…Church Marketing Sucks. OK, if our marketing sucks then stop it! Let’s re-group and actually start communicating. Let’s start telling the story. The best story tellers are the ones that are passionate about the tale they have to tell. If anyone should be passionate about their story it is Christians. Our story is a life-changing story. The best story tellers are great communicators and use any and every tool they can draw upon to captivate the listener’s attention. It is time for us (the church) to become master communicators and let nothing hold us back. Let nothing stand in our way. We have a story that must be told.
Let’s go tell it!

You get no argument from me as long as church marketing is indeed telling the congregation’s real story. Tell the truth and you can call it whatever you like – marketing, whatever. Don’t tell the truth and it’s lies, no matter what you label it.
Thanks for your comment Gordon, I agree. Marketing often gets a bad rap because it lacks integrity. Marketers mis-represent the product or service and people feel they are getting taken. Churches of all organizations need to communicate their real story and be who they are. Well put!
re marketing getting a bad rap:
Yes. And reread my comment and you can sort of smell that negative thinking in my words. Apologies for that. Having had a lot of bad experiences with evangelical Christianity, I tend to shy away. But I was serious when I said that if you tell the truth about yourself, then that is always a good thing. And the right thing for churches to do.
