Church Marketing: Rethink

By David Tonen • November 17th, 2008

Last week I was intrigued by Tony Morgan who got me thinking that Churches Should Start Communicating.  Tony wrote an article titled Churches Should Stop Marketing.  This week he answered the question Why?

As a guy who is trying to help churches communicate better using marketing tools and techniques…I agree with Tony 100%.  I hold a similar philosophy.  Tony said:

“My concern, though, is that we jump to marketing tactics too quickly.  We think if we’re going to get a crowd, we need to market it more.  That’s lazy thinking. Marketing is the easy way out.  More marketing doesn’t make for more people.”

Marketing is not the answer to growing your church.  There are some tools that can be implemented to help, but marketing alone is not the answer.  To use a business term…it ultimately is all about your “product”.  It is about the “service” you are “selling”.  It is about the “need” you are meeting.  If your church is not at its core serving people by sharing the life-changing, life-impacting, life-giving message of Jesus, then no amount of marketing is going to help your church grow.

Churches grow because the leadership mobilizes the Christians that are there with a vision to share that message of hope to everyone they come in contact with.  Not in an obnoxious, intrusive way…in a caring way.  In a “you have got to hear this” loving way.

Once church leadership casts this type of vision and equips people to share the life-changing story with those in their sphere of influence, then and only then can marketing tools help people communicate that message.  Marketing supports but does not replace the communication of the message.

My passion is to help churches who want to mobilize their members to share the message, by developing a marketing action plan (MAP) and from there create tools that help tell the story of life change that Jesus offers.  All the tools that are developed support and compliment the sharing of the story.  That is church marketing that works!
