Blogging: When and Why

By David Tonen • December 4th, 2008

This week’s ChurchCrunch topic of the week:

When Was My First Blog Post?

My first blog post was on January 31, 2008, called Marketing for Halifax.  I decided at the beginning of this year that I was going to start Marketing Integrity.  I have really wanted to start my own business for the past several years and just decided that 2008 was the year to do it!  This year has been a blast and I have learned a lot.  When I wrote that first blog post, I thought I was starting a company that would help small businesses in Halifax Nova Scotia to do better marketing.  I do indeed have many customers here in Halifax.  However, I have discovered something that should not be a surprise, but was at first.  My potential customers are not just in Halifax!  I now have clients in Halifax Nova Scotia, Moncton New Brunswick, Saint John New Brunswick, and in Tennessee!  The diversity of locations is all thanks to the Internet, and in many respects, because I chose to start writing this blog.  My client in Tennessee connected with Marketing Integrity for marketing services because they first connected with this blog.  How cool is that!

What Prompted Me To Start Blogging?

The reason I started blogging is because I had been reading a lot of marketing information that suggested that blogging was good for business.  Many books and articles I read suggested that small business owners should write on their area of specialty to establish themselves as experts, as thought leaders, and to help potential customers to see inside your passion and realize how much you and your company can help them.  I wanted to see if this “theory” really works.  I would never want to suggest to a client that they should do something that I wasn’t willing to do myself.  I believe in testing things to assess their validity.  I also like to test things so that I can form a valid personal opinion of their effectiveness.

The conclusion…blogging does indeed work for business!  It is not for everyone, and it does take a commitment.  That said, it has helped me stay alert to leading marketing trends that can help Marketing Integrity…and our customers.  So, yes, blogging is a good marketing strategy to employ.  As a personal benefit…though I am still not a great writer…it is making me better!

What are your thoughts or experiences with blogging as a business or marketing strategy?
