Marketing: Tell Your Story
Many people are baffled by marketing. I read a definition recently that is actually quite simple and I know will help you.
Seth Godin in his latest book Tribes says:
“Marketing is the act of telling stories about things we make – stories that sell and stories that spread.”
Sure, you can get more complicated than that…but at the core Seth is right. Marketing is all about telling your story. James Higginbotham of Agile Ministry recently wrote a simple post called Telling Stories for Your Cause. One of the points James makes in his short post is:
“Stories are a result of taking action on your vision.”
Effective and excellent marketing is telling your organization’s story in the most compelling, exciting, and innovative way possible. In your story telling, let your raw passion flow – wear your heart on your sleeve. Never be ashamed and let your vision leak into everything you say.
If you embrace telling your story this way and if you use creative mediums to tell it through, people will be drawn to it, see the value in it, and want to be a part of it. Now, that is a recipe for great marketing!

Absolutely. I define marketing as “telling a story that compels people to take notice.” All the rest is fluff.
I have always enjoyed web design. I watched my daughter playing with paint one day and felt a little frustrated about the mess she was making when I suddenly realized I was watching creativity develop before my eyes. So I launched eGrace Creative (sort of named after her) to offer web design services. I plan on developing my own creativity and the creativity of others for the rest of my life – that’s my story.
Thanks for sharing your story Brandon. The challenge is indeed to remove the fluff. Every business and church needs to distill the compelling parts of their story down to an engaging message that prompts the hearer to action.
David,
Thanks for the mention and for reading Agile Ministry!
James
