Educate Yourself on What’s Next

By David Tonen • December 10th, 2008

I love technology.  I love that web-based tools and applications are getting more sophisticated and integrated into our daily lives.  The developments that we have seen occur over the past few years of some platforms has been monumental.  The Internet is growing and becoming more and more diverse for business, ministry, and personal life.

When you talk about platforms like Facebook, YouTube, and MySpace in almost any organizational or social setting these days, the majority of people engaged in the conversation will know what you are talking about.  For the most-part they use or have used these tools.

Technology applications are growing at a rapid pace and the race is always on to establish new and broad-reaching tools that become common-place in their day-to-day use in our society.  The reality is, that there are so many of these new Web 2.0 platforms swirling around out there in cyberspace that it is virtually impossible to stay on top of them all for the average person.  That said, there are some web applications that are surfacing to be the next widely accepted tools and I want to help you to keep in touch with which ones are emerging.

Rick Turoczy over at Read Write Web has written an excellent post that I would encourage you to read.  He has created a list of the Top 10 Consumer Web Apps of 2008.  Why I draw attention to his post is that I think it serves as a good summary, for those of you who are small business owners and ministry managers, of what some of the up-and-coming online technology services are that seem to be cresting to the forefront.

It will be good for you to familiarize yourself with his top-10 list so you know which ones are emerging.  He gives the edge to Twitter, FireFox, IntenseDebate, Hulu, and Ning.  Do you know what these applications are?  Have you used them?  Read Rick’s article.  He nicely highlights their strengths and benefits.  Try some of these tools if you can.  This way, as they continue to embed themselves deeper into our culture in 2009 you will be aware of how they work, the value they offer, and how they can help your organization communicate with greater excellence so you can be more successful connecting with your customers in the coming year.

Share your thought on the tools on the list you have used and the benefits you have realized in business and ministry in the comments section below.
