When You Tweet: Introduce Yourself

By David Tonen • December 18th, 2008

When you meet someone for the first time, it is customary that you introduce yourself a little.  Social media really should not be any different.  Yet, in some platforms like Twitter, we often don’t introduce ourselves very well when people connect with us the first time.  We make it difficult for them to really get a good picture of who we are.  Often, the only real “link” into our online lives is the web link in our profile.  Most of us, including me, link to our core business web site – it’s front page.  Immediately, people are left without orientation and “on their own” to click through our site to find out who we are and what we do.

Darren Rowse at Problogger wrote an excellent post today called Develop an Twitter Landing Page.  I encourage you to read Darren’s article, get the concept, and then implement one of your own.  Darren created this one to introduce himself. I think this is a fabulous idea and it motivated me to create one too.  It is really a simple idea isn’t it!  So, from now on, when people connect with me through Twitter for the first time…they get a proper introduction!  Check out my Twitter Landing Page!  Thanks for the wisdom Darren!

What do you think?  Will you create a Twitter landing page?

That is a pretty cool idea. I also like engaging someone when they follow you. Even a little sentence to say hi and nice to meet you is good. Any replies (or a lack thereof) tells me if I might be interested in following them back.

It really is all about engagement, Leo, isn’t it? You are right, touching out to people that follow you in a personal way is a good introduction as well. You get a sense of their true interest in you and your community.
