Tech Black-Out
It really is amazing how my life has become entwined with technology. I really noticed it the past two days when, due to a major winter storm that hit the east coast, I lost power and high speed. No technology for two days! What is one to do? Well, one spends more time with family and getting things done that do not require “power”…like stacking firewood that has been sitting there for weeks!
I love technology. However, I have to say that I loved the “forced black-out” too. It gave my life a reprieve from all the e-mails, blog posts, and Twitter updates. In its own way, it was quite refreshing. Even nicer that it came just prior to Christmas. It provided a much needed rest. Five years ago, I was blacked out for 10-days when Halifax was hit with hurricane Juan. In reflection, my life is now even more dependent on the Internet. The impact of a blackout is greater now than it was then…though 10-days without power was a big impact.
From a health perspective (mental and physical), it was good to be reminded that there is more to life than the web. I knew that already, but it was interesting not having my day “interrupted” repeatedly by the incoming and outgoing messaging. Maybe 2009 will call for me to implement a forced tech black-out once a week. That’s what I was thinking about over the past few days. Maybe I will force a “No-Computer-Sunday” policy. It might be long overdue.
What do you think? Would a tech freeze one day a week be healthy? Do you ever force a tech black-out?
