Every Pastor Should Be on Facebook
Following my thoughts yesterday regarding Should a Church Have a Facebook Page, I do strongly feel that every pastor should be on Facebook. That is a strong and somewhat bold statement but I am not the only one who thinks that way. Greg Atkinson who wrote the Foreward to an e-book entitled Facebook for Pastors thinks so as does the author of that book Chris Forbes.
Facebook does require an initial investment of time to set up your personal profile, but beyond that, it allows a pastor another vehicle to build relationships within their church community, and that is important. It allows pastors to show their “human” and family side all while being accessible in a contemporary way to interact, answer questions, and “do ministry” online. I am not a pastor, but I see many pastors using Facebook effectively and I see many people who communicate primarily through the messaging (similar to e-mail) functionality of Facebook. As a pastor, you connect better with people if you are where they are…and if you are communicating the way they are communicating.
If you need a little convincing, there is that handy and free little e-book that Chris Forbes has written which will help you become familiarized with the platform and walk you through the set-up process. It also has some nice testimonials from pastors who share their experiences using Facebook. I would encourage you to download this e-book, read it, and experiment with Facebook. You can download Facebook for Pastors here.
Now for your feedback: What has been your experience with Facebook? If you are a pastor, are you using it and what is your opinion on Facebook’s effectiveness as a ministry tool? If you are not a pastor, how have you experienced pastors using Facebook and what is your opinion…should every pastor be on Facebook?
