Word Of Mouth Church Marketing

By David Tonen • February 13th, 2009

What’s the worth of your church?  Do the people that attend think it offers genuine value?  Would visitors see value?

ValueHere’s my challenge for you today:

Take a moment for an introspective look at your congregation.  Think about the people who attend (this will be much easier if your church is less than 300 people – which for most reading this blog is the case).  Are they excited?  Are they so confident that every Sunday you will creatively communicate a relevant message that they are actively inviting their friends?

Richard Reising wrote a thought provoking post today titled The Value Principle.  He got me thinking because of this:

“what do people perceive about the worth of your church? How much are they willing to “pay” for the product? In their minds, is church worth not sleeping late on a Sunday morning?”

Why is an assessment of whether people are actively inviting their friends an indicator of your church’s value?  If people have that confidence then they are sold on the value.  They are never afraid to extend an invitation because they know that they will not need to apologize for their church.  Think about that for a minute.  Do Christians feel they need to apologize or explain their church.  I’ve done it in the past.  Most Christians want to excitedly invite their friends but all too often they think their friends will not see the value – they may even be ashamed that value is not there.  Would you agree?

The best marketing any church can do is equipping sold-out, revved-up, value-convinced members with resources that help them represent God and your church with excellence.  That’s called “word-of-mouth” church marketing.  People who excitedly share what God is doing in their lives as facilitated through the community that is their church.  What you do in your service on Sunday morning is marketing.  It is how you represent the culture of your church as you represent God through all the elements of a Sunday morning service.  I am not asking you to water down the message.  I am just advocating for relevance and value.  A relationship with God is the most valuable thing we can have.  That should be exciting!  Now, please build some of that value and excitement into your service this week.

What do you think?  Am I on track?  Please share your thoughts…

To be perfectly honest I haven’t invited anyone to church, because I have been to busy to trying to hold on to my job to feel confident about socializing. That and my particular situation is a rather diverse mix of religious backgrounds, and an all female department except me (married) but you do have a point.

I guess the bigger question is how does one develop relationships in a fast paced retail or service environment? Relationship is everything in regards to customer service, in yet its nothing as the customer simply wants to be appreciated but left alone
