Top 9 Things Young Adults Want from Church

By David Tonen • April 8th, 2009

I was sent this video (below) and I think it bears some reflection for all church leaders.  The video, titled Misplaced was commissioned by the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada (EFC) and profiles young adults views of the church today.  All too often, for this generation (18-30), churches are failing to be relevant and as a result many young adults are leaving or abandoning “church”.

Young Adults and The Church

The video concludes that after interviewing many young adults there were several common recurring themes. The top-9 wish-list for young adults for churches today is:

  1. Community
  2. Authenticity
  3. Mentorship
  4. Passionate Leaders
  5. Interactive Environment
  6. Involvement
  7. Relevant Engagement
  8. Intellectually Challenged
  9. Technology and Internet Presence

I will write more on this in the coming days, but I really think every church leader should watch this video and reflect on how they can begin to engage the 18+ age group by sincerely being relevant.  If churches could begin implementing a strategy to include some of the themes on this list we could see a whole generation reached that is currently slipping through the cracks in most of our communities.  They want a faith journey, we as leaders just need to understand how to connect with them.  The video is 15 minutes, but will certainly be worth your time.  Please share your comments after you have watched…we can all learn from the reflections and observations of others.

I’ve just started a doctorate – looking into participation of young people in the church. I have thought for some years that active involvement and empowerment is needed for young people to encourage them in their faith journey. This has encouraged me to carry on!! thanks

I have been leading groups in the age ranges of 25 to 35/40 and have noticed that the number one thing they crave is community and relationship with others. I think you are right-on with these thoughts.

I look forward to see your further thoughts.
