Church Marketing to Young Adults

By David Tonen • April 9th, 2009

Continuing on from yesterday’s post 9 Things Young Adults Want From The Church.  In the the video with yesterday’s post, some of the statistics shown include:

  • 67% of young adults would like to get advice from people with similar life experiences
  • 66% would like to use their gifts and talents at their church
  • Eliminate the word “outreach”
  • 68% would like to explore religious environments without pressure
  • Challenge and engage young adults intellectually
  • 73% want to build relationships with other young adults
  • It is imperative to have an understanding of technology and a quality Internet presence

So, what do these statistics mean for your church?  Should you do some things differently in order to be relevant to young adults?

What Role Does Marketing Play?

From the stats, marketing plays a small role in how you genuinely reach young adults.  Sure you can use marketing to deliver a message but clearly this generation can read authenticity with laser precision.  If you claim to be something you are not you will be quickly called on it.  This generation wants transparency, mentorship, passion, and to be engaged in a relationship with God and with their peers.  They also wont accept just going through the motions.  They want you to be real.

Church Marketing to Young Adults

The one “marketing” item that did clearly surface was that it is imperative for a church to have an understanding of technology and a quality Internet presence.  This is a clear signal that if you are going to be relevant you have to get up-to-speed with your web site and your use of technology.

This generation is “on the move” and their technology moves with them.  Help them connect with your ministry by having a great web site (that is up-to-date) that lets them know what is going on when…a place where they can find all the important details when they want them.  Also, integrating technology into your services through video is helpful.  When they miss a Sunday, if they can watch the sermon online or download a podcast, that helps them continue to grow spiritually and stay connected at the same time.  After you have those elements in place, connecting with social media tools like Facebook and Twitter enhance the experience all the more.

Technology is important across the board for your church.  I have been saying that for a long time but hearing it first hand in a video like this underscores the importantance for this generation particularly.  Please take this seriously…they do!

What are your thoughts on a church’s need to have their web and technology presence done with excellence?

I think that churches definitely need to have a professional web presence.

I’m a missionary and also have a business website. You website is a great example of a clean, well laid out, professional web presence.

    You practice what you preach.

    Thanks and God Bless,
    Greg

Great article & site. At 55, I am one of the senior citizens in my church. But with two kids who are now “young adults” as well as a church that is targeting this audience, I am constantly reminded of the need to be relevent and aware of the trends. Even my 80 yr old Mom now uses facebook to keep up with her grandkids.
