Give Me A Sign

By David Tonen • May 13th, 2009

Do you ever think of your church sign as part of your “marketing”?  I am not talking about wheter or not you have a sign that you put catchy sayings on like this one to the left.  I am talking about just the signage that represents the “brand” of your church.

What does your church signage convey?  Is it professional?  Is it modern?  Is it well lit at night?

Then, if a visitor were to pull into your parking lot…would they know instinctively where they should go?  If your church is a smaller church it may be obvious if you have only one door.  The larger your building the more important door signage becomes so that visitors will know where they should be heading and which door leads where?

Once inside your church building, is there signage for where the “sanctuary” or auditorium is?  Are there signs pointing to where the kids program is, where the nursery is, and where the washrooms are?  Will a visitor be able to navigate around your building and find what they need without added stress?

We don’t think these things through very often.  They are very important elements of the first impressions that your visitors have.  They either enhance the visitor experience or frustrate them and leave them feeling as outsiders.

Richard Reising posted a good article I would encourage you to read.  It is entitled Through The Eyes Of A Visitor.  Reflect on your church signage and make changes if yours needs work!

What are your thoughts on church signage?  Have you had an experience that could have been less stressful if a church had been more conscious of the signage around their church?  How is your church’s signage?
