Church Marketing Over The Edge?

By David Tonen • May 15th, 2009

2006 Campaign: Granger Community Church, South Bend, Indiana

Daily we are hit with a barrage of messaging, communication, marketing, and media.  As a result, churches and pastors sometimes fall into the trap of trying to communicate in a way that is edgy…so they too can get people’s attention amidst the noise in our culture.

Sometimes this can be effective…sometimes offensive

The question that we always have to ask is  – are we trying to get attention for attention’s sake or does our methodology line up with what is the best representation of Jesus?

I was prompted to think about this today after reading a recent blog post by Craig Groeschel entitled When Edgy Becomes Offensive.  Craig’s post is not exclusively about marketing but he does offer one suggestion for us to reflect on regarding church marketing and promotion:

“When you are promoting something, don’t make your printed materials and billboards something you wouldn’t want your 9-year-old son or daughter to see.”

Good advice.  Please read Craig’s article.  Short, sweet, and valuable shared wisdom!

What are your thoughts?  Do you agree?  Have you seen examples where church communication and marketing has been offensive?
