Statistical Proof For Church Websites
It is no secret to regular readers of this blog that I adamantly believe that a church web site is a critical marketing tool for effective church ministry. That does not mean that the web site has to be extravagant, glitzy, flashy, or over-the-top. I ascribe to the adage that simpler is better and that as long as the site represents your ministry with excellence, has intuitive navigation, and current content then you have a recipe for success.
Drew Goodmanson posted a blog post today where after doing some church web site research on over 100 churches and 1100 survey participants, he provides the following two compelling statistics:
- 17% of respondents learned about the church they attend through its website first
- 36.1% of respondents said the website played an important role in their decision to attend the church
This affirms and builds a compelling case for every church to have an effective web site to support their ministry. Do you want your church to continue to grow? Do you want your ministry to be attracting people who can use their gifts and talents in your church? This research clearly indicates that a church needs to have a web site that helps people connect with their ministry online before they will come to check out your church. Your web site does effect new people’s church selection decision making.
Your web site is not everything but it is an important cog in the communication and marketing strategy for effectively growing churches. Take some time to seriously assess the viability of your church web site. It is important!
Do you agree?

Well right now we definitely don’t reflect those numbers at our church, but I think a lot of that has to do with poor web strategy..
I think that is important information for any business or church to check out. People seem to defer their website one of the last tasks in their marketing/business plan.
It is quite disappointing to me when I talk to a new business about their website and they basically give me the brush-off. I see the potential they are wasting.
Thanks for your comments Stephen and Leo! For churches, this is an exciting time to be connecting with people online. Granted not everyone is utilizing the web as a research tool but if 20% or more people are then it is a tool that has so much potential to reach people. The cost benefit analysis really is a no brainer!
