Courageously Fight Mediocrity

By David Tonen • June 20th, 2009

I am sad to say that quite often churches settle for mediocrity.

Not all churches mind you, but let’s be honest, mediocrity does tend to permeate its way into church culture – even in churches that are growing.  Think about your church…

Where Mediocrity Has Crept Into Churches

  • Mediocrity in our church marketing (the church web site, church logo, pastor’s business cards, the church bulletin etc.)
  • Mediocrity in creativity (the church PowerPoint slides, announcements, etc.)
  • Mediocrity in music (singing the same hymns and choruses over and over)
  • Mediocrity in presenting the message (the same order of service week after week, little or no use of visuals, video, or drama to enhance the delivery of the message’s key concepts)

How does a church get to be mediocre?  Seth Godin wrote today:

The only way to get mediocre is one step at a time.

You don’t have to settle. It’s a choice you get to make every day.

Michael Hyatt also wrote a great post today that helps us understand what the five obstacles are that get in the way of excellence:

  1. Time
  2. Resources
  3. Experience
  4. Committees
  5. Fear

So, the challenge for your church and mine is to identify the obstacles that are present in our ministry community and remove them.  How?  Michael suggests:

“…if we are going to create wow experiences, we must become courageous.  This is a personal, psychological bridge we need to cross.”

I really encourage you to fight mediocrity.  God is not mediocre.  His creation is filled with excellence and attention to magnificent detail…just look around you!  Be bold and courageous.  Seek to serve God with all the excellence you can manage – we have the best message on the planet to share – please do it to the very best you can!
