Who Should A Church Target?

By David Tonen • June 22nd, 2009

Should a church have a target market?  A target market is a  specified demographic in your community that you are strategically reaching out to.

Most churches rebel against the thought of targeting only one demographic.  Church leaders push to be there for everyone.  And you are.  However you have to look at your own church culture and demographic make up and start to utilize and work with your strengths.

Church Marketing for Seniors

Is your church mostly comprised of people who are are 60+?  If you are, then you are probably best to target seniors.  Trying to be a church to young families is really not who you are (at least not at the moment).  It would be easier for you to create a strategic marketing outreach towards the seniors demographic.

Church Marketing for Young Adults

Does you church primarily consist of those under 30?  If so, then trying to be a church targeting seniors is really not your best strategic focus.  Seniors probably will not naturally be attracted to the style of church you are currently.

Be Yourself

Do you see my point?  Take a close look at what the demographic make-up is of your church currently.  This will give you your first angle for who you should primarily target.  This does not mean that you can not create a strategy to reach a demographic that currently is not being represented or served in your congregation.  However building an outreach to a minority demographic that is not in your church now requires an very focused strategic plan and execution from a programming and marketing or church communications standpoint.

If you want to reach out to your community, the easiest place for your church to target in your programming, your church marketing, and communication is to be who you are and reach out to a like-demographic.  New people will connect more easily and you have a greater probability of success with your outreach initiative.

What do you think?  Have you seen this kind of church target marketing at work or have you seen a contrary approach?

Does MTV target 65 year olds?
    HGTV teenage guys?

    They’re both channels though…
    Target markets are essential

Bang on Stephen! I couldn’t have said it better – an excellent illustration to drive the point home. Thanks!
