How Social Media Has Changed Vacation

By David Tonen • July 11th, 2009

I am on vacation.

Yes, I am but my laptop goes with me.  Instead of spending 10 hours or more a day online, while I have been on vacation I have been online less than an hour a day.  But, I am still online.

I am not the only one.  Many people today travel with their laptop on vacation.  Often-times, small business owners still have to briefly stay connected to e-mail so they can keep client projects in motion or resolve minor emergencies as they occur.  It is still vacation but there are little blips of disruption.

Connected

One of the neat developments of traveling with a laptop and a digital camera is that this combination allows me (and others…I’ve seen you do this too) to use social media to keep family and friends connected to us and the joys of our travel.  I have posted several updates (only one or two a day) via Twitter and Facebook as well as posting 3 sets of vacation pictures.

It has been fun seeing how my personal circle of connections have interacted with the commentary and pictures of our journey.  They, in a small way have gone with us and stayed in tune with us while apart.  They get to know we are safe and having a good time.

Sure is different from 10 or more years ago isn’t it?  Really, it is different from just three years ago!  Without Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, blogs and others, we would have to wait till arriving home to share anything from our journey.  Long gone are the days of post cards!  Now it’s social media.  It’s fast, instant, mobile, and much more personal.

I for one think it is great!  How about you?  What have been your experiences using social media while on vacation?

Now, back to vacation!

I’m about to head to Africa – I wish I had access to feed my followers tweets and status updates all the time – that’s a luxury of the modern world – I’m heading back in time to the bush country where there is no internet. Enjoy yours!

What do I think – I will wait for you to get home and hear all about it ;) I like being disconnected, so deos my cardiologist.

Later man – have a safe journey, return safely.

@Randy: Enjoy your trip. There are some advantages to being totally cut-off from technology.

@Ed: Since you are not on Facebook, yes, you will have to wait for the side-show after dinner! See you soon!
