The Rights to Your Digital Brand
What is your name online? Often very few of us consider our online brand. Increasingly however, our online brand is becoming more and more important. Google has a commanding grip on online search. The majority of people use Google to do their research online.
Your brand power lies in the hands of Google. When someone types your name into Google what do they find? Do you have control over which sites come to the top of the search results? You can, simply by owning your name as a domain name and having a simple web site created to control your own personal brand message. Many people think this isn’t necessary. Maybe not today it isn’t for you but what about next year, two years from now, or five? As more of our lives become influenced by the web it is critical for us to control our online brand and the information attached to it.
And, that extrapolates into all forms of social media as well. So, for me, I own DavidTonen.com, @DavidTonen on Twitter, Facebook.com/DavidTonen and on it goes. Even if you are not using these tools today, it is worth owning the rights to your name and the costs are minimal and in many cases with social media sites…free.
Greg Atkinson wrote a good post today titled Digital Real Estate. He covers this topic well and I would encourage you to read his post and act accordingly to secure the digital rights to your real estate online wherever possible. The more “common” your name is the harder it will be but he and I both agree that you should secure where and what you can today so you will own and control these channels in the future if you want or need them.
What are your thoughts? Have you secured the rights to you digital brand?

Thanks for the post, Mr. D. Excellent info and advice.
Securing the rights to your PERSONAL name are what I consider to be the very foundation of everything you do online. After all, what’s more important than your own name?
Thanks again for your time and expertise.
Keep the faith and keep being YOU!
