Church: Invest In Your Logo

By David Tonen • July 22nd, 2009

Let’s be honest…most churches do not take their logo seriously.  Many churches have no logo at all, those that do had it designed or cobbled together 25 or more years ago…and it looks like it.

A logo is one of the first things that someone you or your church comes in contact with for the first time notices about your church.  It is your “name”.  It is the visual representation that launches the story you are trying to tell and share in words. It is the first thing they notice on the business card the pastor hands them.  It is the first thing they notice on your church sign.  It is the first thing they notice on your web site.

What is the first impression your church makes?

Can your organization be taken seriously?  Are you professional?  Are your worthy of relationship?  Now, in reality, people do not process it that analytically, but in the blink of an eye, make no mistake about it, an impression is made.  They do make a judgement call.  It is your first impression and it is very important.

Every business takes their logo seriously.  It is one of the first things they invest in and they endeavour to keep their logo fresh as their organization grows over the decades.  Churches must as well.  It is an investment.

Don’t Cheap Out

I seriously want to encourage every church to invest in their logo.  Please don’t cheap out – it doesn’t have to break your bank.  A good marketing company can help you significantly with this process.  With your logo you build your brand.  It is your visual representation to the world.  It doesn’t have to be complicated but it does have to look good.  Get this element right because every stitch of marketing and communication you do contains your name…and a good logo will buy you credibility and the opportunity to share your message professionally and with impact.

Do you think churches are winning or losing with their logos or does it matter at all?

We as a parish agree with your comments, and at end of last year worked with a parishioner/designer to overhaul what was more of a shield than a logo for our parish. The end result is fabulous and more importantly led to the overhaul of the web site. With all this done, we can attest that newcomers have commented that our overall look, branding, web site, and more was cause for them to visit and ultimately join! Take a look at what we’ve done: http://www.stthomasepiscopal.org.

Thanks for sharing Jill. I looked at the site and a nice job was done to represent the heritage of the church and the denomination in the logo and the site. It makes all the difference having it done professionally and with excellence.

Excellent article! As a designer, former Church Creative Director and current church planter I completely affirm your opinion! Churches who don’t spend the time and effort to craft a well-thought out brand aren’t fully engaging with the creative element in our culture.

    Great reminder!

Thanks Brad! I just think that design is so important in our culture and we can not reach out with any credibility if our church graphics are irrelevant!
