8 Minutes: The Future of Technology For The Church

By David Tonen • September 4th, 2009

I have wrestled all day with the video below and I felt I had to share it with you.  I discovered it as I read two blog posts this morning.  Kerry Bural wrote a post earlier this week titled “Will The Church Be Ready For This Technology?” and Michael Holmes asked Is This Technology A Threat or Blessing To The Church?

The prospect of this technology leap being not so far off in the distant future rattles me a little bit…from two sides.  On one hand, it excites the living daylights out of me and I think it is unbelievably amazing and cool.  On the other hand it is just down right scary where incredibly intelligent people are pushing technology boundaries to.

How this will actually develop remains to be seen but make no mistake about it…some things are going to change dramatically as this type of thing is developed.  I, like Kerry and Michael am not really making any statement for or against it.  I just think that we, as church leaders and marketers should begin thinking about how such developments can be used for good in reaching our communities and the world with the even more powerful and amazing message of Jesus.

Take 8-minutes now and watch this presentation that was given by Pattie Maes at the TED Conference in February 2009.  Take it in, reflect upon it, and have a glimpse into the future…and then please share your comments in the comment section below.  How do you think churches will accept or implement this type of technology?  How does it make you feel?
