The Art of Being Useful

By David Tonen • October 5th, 2009

Recently I have been spending some time on different church web sites to get a sense for how useful they are.  When I say useful, I mean more than easy to use…

Easy To Use

A church web site has to be easy to use.  The navigation needs to be very intuitive and the section headers obvious.  Seldom do people go surfing around the web accidentally stumbling on your church web site with the intention of just browsing around.  It is more likely that 99% of the time, visitors to your web site are coming there intentionally.  They are looking for churches in your community and they find your site through a Google search.  Or, they already know your church exists and they are specifically searching for your site so they can find out specific information – like what time the service starts, how to contact the pastor, or something relevant to a need their family has.

Make it intuitive.  Make it easy to navigate – so people can find the info they are looking for quickly and be on their way.

Being Useful

Secondly, make sure your site is useful.  Beyond easy to navigate, make sure the information your provide is clear, concise, and simply useful.  Think through all the questions that a visitor might have and make sure you succinctly answer them.  Provide useful information on your programs and services.  Provide a map and directions so new people can easily find your building.  Make sure your site represents the culture your church really is and has…don’t pretend to be something that you are not.

Please make sure your site is usable and useful.  Don’t frustrate people – help them!
