Marketing Idols
Our culture is all about raising people up on pedestals.
- Heroes.
- Stars.
- Celebrities.
- Idols
Let’s be honest. That’s what “marketing” does. It raises idols. Maybe we need to rethink this.
Take a few minutes (6 minutes actually) to watch pastor Mark Driscoll’s response to this when he was interviewed by ABC’s Nightline last night – American Idol Worship.

Wow! That’s all I can say
I like how the segment concludes:
“Maybe the most relevant commandment of all”.
I should say that marketing plays a big role in the idol creation, but “media” of all types are the equally responsible for the elevation of people to places of prominence. In the end it is us (people) who choose to buy in and choose to “follow” and overly uplift these people.
But they won’t stop…why should they?
1) It news and that’s what they’re after
2) Principalities and powers of the air are in control of large media. So why should the focus be on God?
