Everything A Christian Does, Is Marketing Jesus
Yesterday, I wrote a post titled Everything A Church Does is Marketing. Steve Fogg commented on that post with the proposition that:
“everything Christians also do and say outside of Sunday is marketing the church too.”
He wrote a blog post about that: Church Marketing Everything. I agree completely, Steve – your list makes sense on so many levels. The whole concept is worthy of further reflection don’t you think?
The Representation Principle
Everything we as Christians do is marketing, representing, and telling the story of Jesus. “The church” is a community of Christians…Christ followers. So, naturally, people we come in contact with see how we represent Jesus – they see how we live out the principles He taught and the relationship we have with Him.
I would propose that people who are not Jesus followers, are watching you and watching me. They want to see evidence of value. They want to see that what we say we believe is true and relevant. So they watch…and they judge what they see.
Do they see religion? Religion is not a draw people in our culture today.
Do they see life change? People want to see that going down the Jesus road is better than staying on the road they are currently on.
Do they see genuineness or hypocrisy? People want to know you and I are real.
My Jesus Marketing
So, let’s bring Steve’s points home to a personal level shall we?
- My speech – everything I say and how I say it represents Jesus
- My actions - everything I do and how I do it reflects the story of Jesus
- My reactions – how I react in every circumstance (good or bad) tells the story (or lack thereof) of Jesus effect in my life
- My love – how I care for those closest to me reveals Jesus love in me
- My care – how I look after those I know and those I don’t represents Jesus compassion in my life
People are watching, listening, and assessing. It is not so much what we say as what we do. Is the story I am telling through my life drawing people towards Jesus? My life, your life…is marketing, communicating, and telling Jesus story. Am I doing a good job? Are you? Is the story I am telling compelling anyone to consider following Him?
Maybe this is this a good time to overhaul the way I am marketing Jesus? How about you?
